Telangana State Biodiversity Board has celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 on 23rd May at Bhaskara Auditorium, B.M. Birla Center, Hyderabad.
The Hon’ble Chief Guest for the event was Dr. Rajat Kumar, IAS, Special Chief Secretary to Government of Telangana, Irrigation and Environment Science and Technology Department, Chairman, Telangana State Biodiversity Board.
The International Day for Biological Diversity is commemorating on 22nd May every year, to raise the awareness of biodiversity and deduce threats to biodiversity. The celebration theme for this year’s biodiversity day is
“From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity”. The theme focuses on the adoption of the “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.” in order to achieve the targets of the Framework and actions taken to implement them for the betterment of biodiversity and reducing threats to it.
For the celebration of The International Day for Biological Diversity, 23rd May this year also Telangana State Biodiversity Board has conducted various state level competitions via online mode for the school children’s, inter and college students and general public. The competitions conducted in several categories like, Essay writing, Photograph, Painting, Traditional dance, Cartoon designing, and elocution. Moreover to celebrate International Millet year, and increase importance of millets in our daily life for healthy living, a special competition was conducted through online mode, viz. Millets based dishes and recipes.
Around 1000 entries were received from the parts of the Telangana state as well as the country.
On this day we felicitated the best functional Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) of Telangana are also awarded, for their excellent performance in the Biodiversity conservation and management were given to Patancheru mandal.
In addition, a book entitled with “A treatise on genetic resources of agri- horticulture crops” was released by Hon’ble Chief guest.
Furthermore as a part of The International Day for Biological Diversity 2023, Two state level online webinars were also organized by Telangana State Biodiversity Board on topic, “Locally available seasonal foods” and “ Value of Millets in our daily life” to raise awareness and encourage common peoples to consume it for healthy living.
As the theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity,
“From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity”, followed by a special talk on topic “Build Back Biodiversity” by Dr. Sejal Worah, Conservation Program Director WWF- India.
An Exhibition on Millets of Telangana was also organized, to create awareness about millets in our day today life.
Released audio book of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and Telangana State Biodiversity Rules 2015 both in Telugu and English by the Chief Guest
Over more than 500 peoples across the state counting Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) members, officials, line department and students participated in the commemoration.
